Acceptance Sampling - Sampling by Attributes Explained

Joseph Kenol, Quality Assurance and Corporate Compliance Director

The acceptance sampling techniques were adopted in 1971 by the American National Standards Institute as ANSI Standard Z1.4 and in 1974 it was adopted (with minor changes) by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO Std. 2859. Acceptance sampling is an important field of statistical quality control that was popularized by Dodge and Romig and originally applied by the U.S. military to the testing of bullets during World War II. This presentation is intended to provide answers to basic questions about the sampling inspection techniques but, will not cover aspects of the standard dealing with Operating Curves (OC). Handouts of sampling tables will be provided and a basic inspection plan will be demonstrated.
