Quality
by Design - Taguchi Quality Engineering
Taguchi quality engineering is the accepted methodology for DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) projects. It is also employed by world-class organizations who follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) to ensure compliance with Quality-by-Design requirements as advocated by regulatory agencies such as the US FDA.
The key element in the Taguchi method of quality engineering for achieving robust designs that provide high quality output at low cost is the stage called parameter design. Through parameter design process factors are determined such that the products functional characteristics are optimized and the effect of noise factors is minimized. Here signal-to-noise ratios are optimized to achieve robust process settings.
Traditional
non-parameter design fosters the idea that higher quality must cost more
money. Taguchi quality engineering instead places emphasis on initially
optimizing with low cost materials and components (parameter design) and
spending money (tolerance design) only when necessary. Invest last
rather than invest first. The presentation will provide a
step-by-step overview of the Taguchi quality engineering method including
a case study of a pharmaceutical spray-drying improvement project performed
at ASI Columbia in 2009.
